OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal discomforts (MSDs) are prevalent occupational health issues that are associated with a wide range of risk factors. This study aimed to investigate some of the occupational hidden risk factors and the mediating role of sleep in work-related musculoskeletal discomforts. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, the role of job stress and shift work as two hidden risk factors and sleep problems as the mediator in work-related musculoskeletal discomforts was investigated in 302 healthcare workers using the path analysis models. For this aim, healthcare workers' Occupational Stress and musculoskeletal discomforts were evaluated using the Health and Safety Executive questionnaire and Cornell questionnaire, respectively. Moreover, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) were used to examine the sleep characteristics of participants. Shift work and job stress as predictor variables and sleep characteristics as mediating variables were analyzed. RESULTS: The results showed that the path coefficients of job stress on indexes of quality sleep and insomnia severity were significant. Also, the path coefficient of shift work on quality sleep index was significant. In return, the path coefficients of shift work on the insomnia severity index were not significant. Additionally, there was a mutually significant association between indexes of quality sleep and the severity of insomnia and musculoskeletal discomforts. The direct effect coefficient of job stress on MSDs was significant, whereas the direct effect coefficient of shift work on MSDs was insignificant. This means that shift work alone does not significantly impact these disorders. CONCLUSION: It would seem that shift work and job stress as two occupational hidden risk factors can mediate sleep indexes and indirectly play a critical role in the incidence of musculoskeletal discomforts. Moreover, sleep disorders and musculoskeletal discomforts are mutually related and have a bidirectional relationship.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and cost of musculoskeletal diseases increased dramatically over the past few decades. Therefore, several institutions have begun to re-evaluate the quality of their musculoskeletal educational paths. However, current standardized questionnaires inadequately assess musculoskeletal knowledge, and other musculoskeletal-specific exams have limitations in implementation. The musculoskeletal 30-question multiple choice questionnaire (MSK-30) was proposed as a new tool for assessing basic musculoskeletal knowledge. AIM: To analyse basic musculoskeletal knowledge in a sample of Italian physiotherapists by administering the MSK-30 questionnaire. METHODS: After a transcultural adaptation process, the MSK-30 was developed and administered to Italian physiotherapists to assess their musculoskeletal knowledge. Participants were invited to participate in the survey via the SurveyMonkey link. Mann-Whitney test and the Kruskal-Wallis test with Bonferroni correction were used to observe the differences between groups in the MSK-30 scores. RESULTS: Four hundred-fourteen (n=414) physiotherapists participated in the survey. The median MSK-30 value was higher in physiotherapists who attended the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists postgraduate certification than in those who attended unstructured postgraduate training in musculoskeletal condition or in those who had not completed any postgraduate training in this field (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This work demonstrates significant differences in the management of musculoskeletal disorders between those with specific postgraduate university education and those without. The findings can contribute to the advancement of the physiotherapy profession in Italy. Authors recommend further research with more robust methodologies to deeper understand this topic. Musculoskeletal conditions will continue to represent a significant portion of primary care visits, and future generations of physiotherapists must be prepared to address this challenge.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to translate, culturally adapt, and validate a Spanish version of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire for a sample of nursing assistant aides. METHODS: The questionnaire was translated and culturally adapted. Next, it was included in a battery of tests that was completed by 526 nursing assistants working in residential care homes in the Principality of Asturias (Spain). To assess its validity, the Exploratory Factor Analysis and the Confirmatory Factor Analysis were used. The internal consistency was estimated with McDonald's Omega coefficient (?), complemented by the test-retest reliability analysis through the intraclass correlation coefficient. The validity of the criteria was established by the correlation between total score on the test and quality of life measures, job insecurity and psychological demand, and social support at work. RESULTS: The Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis adjustment indices confirmed it is a unidimensional test. The internal consistency values indicated very high reliability (? = 0.81). Similarly, the intraclass correlation coefficient showed statistically significant values and an excellent correlation coefficient (r = 0.95). The validity of the criteria showed a statistically significant correlation with all the constructs studied, particularly with quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: This Spanish version of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire has good psychometric qualities for a population of nursing aides and therefore may be a valid and reliable tool for assessing musculoskeletal disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and their association with physical activity among schoolteachers in the United Arab Emirates. METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study involved 209 schoolteachers (aged 20-60) with a minimum of two years of experience. Data, including demographics (gender, age), Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) for WMSD prevalence and pain sites, and Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) for physical activity levels, were collected. Six schools were visited for data collection, with consent from school heads and participants. Schedules were tailored to participant availability, allowing up to three attempts for participation. Non-respondents were identified after three unsuccessful attempts. RESULTS: Of the total 206 participants, 149 were female, while the remaining 57 were male. Age distribution analysis revealed that 18% of individuals were within the 20 to 30 years range, 26.2% fell within the 30 to 40 years, and 36.9% had 40 to 50 years age brackets. The responses were obtained in Arabic (90%) and English (10%). The study identified a high prevalence (71.4%) of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) in UAE schoolteachers, with neck pain being the most common (74.3%). Major risk factors included age, workload, and low physical activity. The data was normally distributed, and Pearson's Correlation test revealed weak positive correlation (r: 0.14), but statistically significant (p value = 0.04) between WMSD and PA, indicating that it was a contributing factor but other factors beyond PA influenced WMSD prevalence in this cohort. The findings of the study are based on certain limitations such as cross-sectional design and convenient sampling which could have potential selection bias and affect generalizability of the results. CONCLUSION: Findings suggest the need to promote physical activity and reduce workload for teachers, considering their age and gender. Additionally, there is a need to raise awareness regarding ergonomics and the importance of taking short breaks for stretching or physical movement to enhance the overall well-being of schoolteachers in the UAE and similar contexts. Diverse prevalence rates across different body areas underscore the necessity for individualized treatments.

Fundamento. El objetivo de este trabajo es traducir, adaptar culturalmente y validar una versión española del Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) en una muestra de personal auxiliar de enfermería. Metodología. Se realizó la traducción y adaptación cultural del cuestionario y se incluyó dentro de una batería de escalas, cumplimentada por 526 auxiliares de enfermería de centros residenciales para personas mayores del Principado de Asturias. Se analizó la validación de la escala a través de la sucesión del análisis factorial exploratorio (AFE) y el análisis factorial confirmatorio (AFC). La consistencia interna se estimó con el coeficiente ordinal ω de McDonald, complementándose con el análisis de fiabilidad test-retest por medio del coeficiente de correlación intraclase (ICC). La validez de criterio se estimó a través de la correlación de la puntuación total de la prueba con las medidas de calidad de vida, incertidumbre laboral, demanda psicológica y apoyo social en el trabajo. Resultados. Los índices de ajuste de AFE y AFC mostraron que se trata de una prueba unidimensional. Los valores de consistencia interna señalaron una fiabilidad muy alta (ω= 0,81) y el ICC fue excelente (r= 0,95). La validez de criterio mostró una correlación estadísticamente significativa con todos los constructos estudiados, especialmente con la calidad de vida. Conclusiones. La presente versión española del NMQ presenta unas buenas cualidades psicométricas en la población de personal auxiliar de enfermería por lo que podría ser una herramienta válida y fiable en la evaluación de los trastornos musculoesqueléticos. BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), occupational stress, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL); identify the factors that affect HRQoL; and investigate the moderating effects of WMSDs on occupational stress and HRQoL. METHODS: The participants were construction workers who had worked in the construction industry for over three months. A total of 178 construction workers voluntarily participated and anonymously completed the musculoskeletal symptoms questionnaire, the Korean Occupational Stress Scale, short-form 36. The moderation effect of WMSDs on occupational stress and HRQoL were analyzed by Haye's Process Macro Model. RESULTS: The results of the study showed that 96 subjects (53.9%) had WMSDs, and the most common pain site was the lower back (33.3%). The group with WMSDs had higher occupational stress than did the group without WMSDs (p < 0.01). Compared with the group without WMSDs, the group with WMSDs displayed significant differences in HRQoL (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the factor affecting HRQoL was WMSDs (p < 0.001). In the impact of occupational stress on HRQoL, WMSDs had a significant moderating effect (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that construction workers' WMSDs significantly impact occupational stress and HRQoL, and WMSDs have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between occupational stress and HRQoL. Therefore, to improve the HRQoL of workers in the construction industry, it is necessary to develop methods to reduce occupational stress and prevent and treat WMSDs.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are increasing in cost and time lost from work. Electronic health records have the potential to provide rich data to help inform and predict outcomes to WMSDs. The objective is to compare an EHR dataset from an occupational health service to comparative data, to help determine if the EHR dataset can be used in future studies to predict outcomes to care.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and associated sociodemographic and work-related factors among dental assistants (DAs) in the hail province, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: Participants were 119 DAs with an average age of 28.9 years (SD ± 4.8 years), of whom 86.6% were females. A self-administered questionnaire which included Nordic Musculoskeletal questionnaire and questions on socio-demographic and work-related factors was used. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate the prevalence of MSDs during the past 12 months and 7 days. Multivariate binary logistic regression statistical tests were used to calculate the association between MSDs and socio-demographic and work-related factors. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of MSDs among DAs was significantly high, with 85.7% reporting symptoms during the past 12 months and 47.9% during the past 7 days. The shoulders, followed by the lower back, were the most common complaints among participants in the past 12 months and 7 days, followed by the upper back and neck. Multivariate binary logistic regression analysis results show significant associations between MSDs and age, Body-Mass-Index (BMI), physical demands during working hours, work environment and posture awareness, and years of experience. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of MSDs among DAs is high, and sociodemographic and work-related factors play an important role in exacerbation of MSDs in DAs.

PURPOSE: Sickness absence is a major public health problem, given its high cost and negative impact on employee well-being. Understanding sickness absence duration and recovery rates among different groups is useful to develop effective strategies for enhancing recovery and reducing costs related to sickness absence. METHODS: Our study analyzed data from a large occupational health service, including over 5 million sick-listed employees from 2010 to 2020, out of which almost 600,000 cases were diagnosed by an occupational health physician. We classified each case according to diagnosis and gender, and performed descriptive statistical analysis for each category. In addition, we used survival analysis to determine recovery rates for each group. RESULTS: Mean sickness duration and recovery rate both differ significantly among groups. Mental and musculoskeletal disorders had the longest absence duration. Recovery rates differed especially during the first months of sickness absence. For men the recovery rate was nearly constant during the first 1.5 year, for women the recovery rate was relatively low in the first three months, and then stayed nearly constant for 1.5 year. CONCLUSION: Across almost all diagnostic classes, it was consistently observed that women had longer average sickness absence durations than to men. Considering mental disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, women had relatively lower recovery rates during the initial months compared to men. As time progressed, the recovery rates of both genders converged and became more similar.

BACKGROUND: The fear avoidance components scale (FACS) evaluates patients' cognitive, emotional and behavioral fear avoidance behavior. The aim of the study was to conduct the cross-cultural adaptation, reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the FACS. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was carried out with 208 patients (46.2 ± 11.4 years, 116 women, 92 men) diagnosed with chronic pain related to musculoskeletal disorders. Individuals were assessed with FACS, Tampa scale of kinesiophobia (TSK), Beck depression inventory (BDI), Oswestry disability index (ODI), numerical pain scale (NPS), and pain catastrophizing scale (PCS). A total of 70 patients completed the FACS for the second time 3 days later. RESULTS: Internal consistency of the total score was excellent (Cronbach's alpha: 0.815). There was a strong correlation between FACS and TSK and PCS (r1 0.555, r2 0.678, p < 0.001). In addition, the relationship between FACS and BDI and NPS was moderate in terms of construct validity (r1 0.357, r2 0.391, p < 0.001). FACS had a two-factor structure, as expected. The test-retest reliability of the FACS was acceptable to excellent (ICC = 0.526-0.971). CONCLUSION: The Turkish version of FACS is a valid and reliable questionnaire for patients with chronic pain related to musculoskeletal disorders. The FACS provides a further advantage over identical questionnaires by evaluating cognitive, behavioral and emotional fear avoidance components.

Musculoskeletal injuries in elite sports are ones of the most impact issue because their remarkable impact on performance caused by drastic absence of training and competition and a progressive deterioration in physical health, emotional and social athletes' dimensions. Also, the prevalence of epidemiologic research found an incidence of musculoskeletal disorders vary within sports and in elite athletes which is even higher as a consequence of higher demand physical performance. This way, the loss of physical performance due to an sport injury impacts not only the individual economic sphere of the professional but also that ofsports entities, reaching, according to some studies, a loss estimated in the range of 74.7 million pounds. Thus, the purpose of this article is to review and to provide an overview of the most common musculoskeletal injuries in elite sports precipitating factors, clinical presentation, evidence-based diagnostic evaluation, and treatment recommendations with a view to preventing medical conditions or musculoskeletal injuries that may alter performance and general health in the elite athletes.

PURPOSE: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMD) are the most common causes of disability worldwide and are associated with significant use of healthcare. One way to optimize the clinical outcomes of injured workers receiving rehabilitation is to identify and address individual prognostic factors (PF), which can facilitate the personalization of the treatment plan. As there is no pragmatic and systematic method to collect prognostic-related data, the purpose of the study was to develop and assess the acceptability of a set of questionnaires to establish the "prognostic profile" of workers with WRMD. METHODS: We utilized a multistep process to inform the acceptability of the Measures Associated to PrognoStic (MAPS) questionnaire. During STEP-1, a preliminary version of the was developed through a literature search followed by an expert consensus including a patient-advisor. During STEP-2, future users (rehabilitation professionals, healthcare administrators and compensation officers) were consulted through an online survey and were asked to rate the relevance of each content item; items that obtained ≥80% of "totally agree" answers were included. They were also asked to prioritize PF according to their usefulness for clinical decision-making, as well as perceived efficacy to enhance the treatment plan. RESULTS: The questionnaire was developed with three categories: the outcome predicted, the unique PF, and prognostic tools. Personal PF (i.e.: coping strategies, fear-avoidance beliefs), pain related PF (i.e.: pain intensity/severity, duration of pain), and work-related PF (i.e.: work physical demands, work accommodations) were identified to be totally relevant and included in the questionnaire. 84% of the respondents agreed that their patients could complete the MAPS questionnaire in their clinical setting, while 75% totally agreed that the questionnaire is useful to personalize rehabilitation interventions. CONCLUSION: The MAPS questionnaire was deemed acceptable to establish the "prognostic profile" of injured workers and help the clinicians in the treatment decision-making process.

Pediatric musculoskeletal infections (MSIs) are a major contributor to the global burden of musculoskeletal disease in children and young adults. If untreated, or treated inappropriately or inadequately, pediatric bone and joint infections can be fatal or result in morbidity that causes significant functional disabilities to the patient and economic burden to the family and the community at large. The past decade has witnessed many advances in this field with respect to early diagnosis, management, and prevention of complications. It is important to discuss the current controversies in the management of pediatric MSIs with an international perspective. This discussion should include the controversies associated with the early diagnosis and identification of pediatric MSI in diverse settings; the controversies involved in the nonsurgical and surgical management of acute pediatric MSIs; and the controversies associated with the management of sequelae of pediatric MSI.

BACKGROUND: This study focuses on identifying the key factors associated with ergonomic behaviors (ERBE) among women workers on assembly lines (WwAL) to prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) caused by repetitive motions and unfavorable body postures. To achieve this objective, this study employed Bayesian networks (BN) analysis based on social cognitive theory (SCT). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the predictive factors of ERBE among 250 WwAL from six different industries located in Neyshabur, a city in northeastern Iran. The study used a two-stage cluster sampling method for participant selection and self-report questionnaires to collect data on demographic characteristics, variables associated with SCT, ERBE, and the standard Nordic questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using Netica and SPSS version 21, which involved statistical analyses such as independent t-tests, Pearson correlation, and ANOVA tests at a significance level of p < 0.05. BN analysis was conducted to identify the important factors that impact ERBE. RESULTS: The majority of individuals reported experiencing chronic pain in their back, neck, and shoulder areas. Engaging in physical activity, consuming dairy products, and attaining a higher level of education were found to be significantly associated with the adoption of ERBE p < 0.05. Among the various SCT constructs, observational learning, intention, and social support demonstrated the highest levels of sensitivity towards ERBE, with scores of 4.08, 3.82, and 3.57, respectively. However, it is worth noting that all SCT constructs exhibited a certain degree of sensitivity towards ERBE. CONCLUSIONS: The research findings demonstrate that all constructs within SCT are effective in identifying factors associated with ERBE among WwAL. The study also highlights the importance of considering education levels and variables related to healthy lifestyles when promoting ERBE in this specific population.

Risk identification on workstations is a crucial step to prevent the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) in workers. The available methods and tools used by ergonomists to assess and estimate the risk related to manual handling of loads under repetitive work cycles are usually biased by the inter-evaluator error that can lead to a subjective determination of work-related risks due to the application of, mainly, observational methods. This paper shows the preliminary results of a platform to assess the risk of musculoskeletal disorders during manual load-handling tasks using an instrumented system and using the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) method. Eight healthy subjects were measured during lifting activities using an optical-based and inertial-based motion capture systems. The developed software implements a semi-automated instrumented version of the NIOSH method, helping the evaluator with automated calculations of body segment locations, displacements and joint angles making it possible to obtain a objective risk classification. Also, we achieved a reduction of 85% in the time for the estimation of the necessary factors for the digital evaluation methodology, making the proposed platform a promising and attractive alternative for its application in real environments for risk assessments.Occupational health relevance- This work proposes an assistance tool for the detection of musculoskeletal disorders in activities related to manual handling of loads, essential to initiate modification strategies in the workplace, reduce the occurrence of occupational diseases and reduce the time of risk classification.

BACKGROUND: The upper limb functional index (ULFI) is a widely used self-report outcome measure questionnaire with robust psychometric properties to assess the upper limb musculoskeletal disorders (UL-MSDs). This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of ULFI (ULFI-Ar). METHODS: In this observational study, 139 patients (87 male, 52 females with mean age of 38.67 ± 13.04 year) with various UL-MSD's, completed the ULFI-Ar, Disability of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire (DASH-Arabic), and numeric pain rating scale (NPRS-Arabic). All participants determined the factor structure, and the construct validity. A subgroup of the participants determined test-retest reliability (n = 46) and responsiveness (n = 27). RESULTS: The ULFI-Ar construct validity obtained by the expletory factor analysis as one-factor structure, demonstrated an excellent test-retest reliability [intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC2:1) = 0.95], measurement error [standard error of measurement (SEM) = 4.43%; minimal detectable change at 90% confidence interval (MDC90) = 10.34%], medium internal responsiveness [Cohen's d = 0.62 and standard response of mean (SRM) = 0.67], strong external responsiveness DASH-Arabic (r =-0.90; p < 0.001), and negative strong correlation with NPRS-Arabic (r =-0.75, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The ULFI-Ar is a valid, reliable, and responsive self-report questionnaire to assess UL-MSDs in Arabic speaking patients.

Background and Objectives: although musculoskeletal alterations are common in patients with Down syndrome (DS), studies investigating this association are scarce, and proposals for diagnostic standardization are limited. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in the lower limbs in a sample of children and adolescents with DS and to investigate the diagnostic capacity of orthopedic clinical examinations performed by orthopedists and pediatricians to diagnose these alterations. Materials and Methods: Twenty-two patients aged between three and ten years with DS were included. Patients and guardians answered a simple questionnaire regarding orthopedic complaints and underwent a systematic orthopedic physical examination, performed twice: once by an orthopedist and again by a pediatrician. Patients underwent a series of radiographs to diagnose anisomelia, hip dysplasia, epiphysiolysis, flatfoot valgus, mechanical axis varus, and mechanical axis valgus. The radiological diagnosis was considered the gold standard, and the diagnostic capacity of the physical examination performed by each physician was determined. Results: The median age was 6.50 years. Only four patients (18.2%) presented with orthopedic complaints. All patients were diagnosed with at least one musculoskeletal disorder. The only musculoskeletal disorder with a good diagnostic capacity was flatfoot valgus. Limited sensitivity values were found for hip dysplasia, mechanical axis varus, and mechanical axis valgus. The agreement between the orthopedic physical examinations performed by the two examiners was weak, poor, or indeterminate for most of the analyzed items. Conclusions: There was a high prevalence of orthopedic alterations in children with DS who did not present with musculoskeletal complaints. The diagnostic capacity of the physical examination was limited. Therefore, all children with DS should undergo a radiological evaluation of the musculoskeletal system and subsequent specialized orthopedic evaluation. BACKGROUND: Pediatric musculoskeletal disorders account for 10% of first-line consultations in Tunisia. Referral delay and deficiencies in musculoskeletal screening raise a challenge to the early diagnosis and management of rheumatic conditions in children. The pGALS (Pediatric Gait Arms Legs Spine) was developed and translated into many languages to overcome these deficiencies. Our study aimed to adapt and validate pGALS to the Tunisian dialect for school-age children. METHODS: Using the Delphi method, we carried out a cross-cultural adaptation of the pGALS to the Tunisian dialect. This consensual version was validated in a cross-sectional study, in two pediatric centers. RESULTS: Ninety-two patients were enrolled, 43 females (46.7%) and 49 males (53.3%), mean age was 9.4 ± 2.6 years. The mean test duration was 3.4 ± 2.3 min, and the acceptability and comprehension of the test were good. Six patients had a musculoskeletal complaint, 19 had positive pGALS, and 14 were diagnosed with musculoskeletal disease. The internal consistency score (Cronbach's α) was 0.852. The sensitivity of the test was 92.8%, the specificity was 92.3%, the positive likelihood ratio was 2.16, and the negative likelihood ratio was 0.01. CONCLUSION: The pGALS test adapted to the Tunisian dialect is a relevant, quick, and valid tool for screening musculoskeletal abnormalities in school-age children.
